Across the hills of the Axarquía, between Vélez-Málaga, Arenas, Comares and El Borge, almond trees dot slopes of vines and olive groves with white and pink. They usually bloom from mid-January into February.
What grows here
Rain-fed almond trees grown for their nuts, on steep slopes shared with olive groves and Muscat vineyards for raisins. No figure for the area under almonds in the district has been found.

The Axarquía's raisin-grape farming, which shares the hillsides with the almonds, was recognised by the FAO in 2017 as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System.
