Around Brihuega, in the Alcarria region of Guadalajara, wide expanses of lavender and lavandin turn the fields purple in July, until harvesting begins.

What grows here

True lavender and lavandin (super, grosso and abrial, among others), grown to distil essential oil for perfume and cosmetics. Harvesting usually starts in late July or early August and finishes around mid-August.

Did you know?

Lavender was brought here by Álvaro Mayoral, a schoolteacher from Barriopedro, after he saw the fields of Provence. In October 1963 he and his brother Ángel planted the first hundred plants sent from France; about sixty took root.
