Between La Carlota and Castro del Río, the rolling farmland of the Córdoba countryside fills with flowering sunflowers at the start of summer, among cereal fields and olive groves.
What grows here
Sunflowers grown for oilseed, mostly high-oleic varieties in Andalusia. In 2026 the province of Córdoba sowed around 33,100 hectares, some 8,100 more than the year before.

La Carlota was founded in 1767 as one of Charles III's New Settlements, which brought German and Flemish colonists to thinly populated land. That is why its streets and outlying hamlets follow a neat grid.
