The farmland between Carmona, Utrera and El Coronil lies in Spain's largest sunflower-growing area: in June, before the plants dry off for harvest, yellow flower heads stretch across wide expanses of the plain.
What grows here
Sunflowers grown for oil, mostly high-oleic varieties. The province of Seville, Spain's leading producer, sowed 132,355 hectares in 2026, 55% of all the sunflowers grown in Andalusia.

Did you know?
Only young sunflowers track the sun from east to west. Once in flower they stay facing east, so the heads warm up earlier in the morning and attract more pollinators, according to a study published in Science in 2016.
