La Bureba is a broad cereal-growing plain in north-east Burgos province, ringed by hills, with Briviesca as its main town. In spring, poppies splash the wheat fields and field edges with red.
What grows here
The common poppy (Papaver rhoeas) is not a crop but a wild plant that springs up among the cereals. Numbers vary greatly from year to year with rainfall and how each field is treated; in Castile and León it flowers mainly in May and June.

Did you know?
La Bureba also grows opium poppy legally: a white-flowered relative of the field poppy, used to produce morphine and codeine for the pharmaceutical industry. It has been grown here since the 2000s.
