Across Las Cañadas in Teide National Park, the red tajinaste raises spires of red flowers up to 3 m tall in May and June. Good places to see it include La Fortaleza and the area around the Parador.
What grows here
A wild plant (Echium wildpretii), endemic to the Canary Islands, growing naturally within the national park rather than cultivated. It forms a rosette of silvery leaves before sending up a huge flower spike, and beekeepers prize it for its rich nectar.

Did you know?
The red tajinaste flowers only once in its lifetime and then dies. Its scientific name honours the 19th-century Swiss botanist Hermann Josef Wildpret.
