High in the mountains of Gran Canaria, the slopes around Tejeda turn white and pink in the depths of winter as the almond trees come into flower, usually from late January through February.
What grows here
Almond trees, known locally as almendreros, grown for their nuts. They reached Gran Canaria with the Castilian conquest, and the island still has 50 to 60 varieties. The almonds are the basis of Tejeda marzipan and bienmesabe.

The festival was started by the village youth club, founded in 1969, under the curious name ‘PUM 70’. It is regarded as the first secular festival of its kind on Gran Canaria and now holds National Tourist Interest status.
