Close to 50,000 cherry trees blossom around early April on the terraces of El Hornillo, El Arenal and Guisando, on the southern side of the Gredos mountains in Ávila. The flowers are short-lived, lasting a week or two among chestnut, walnut and other fruit trees.
What grows here
Cherries grown for fruit on family smallholdings, with more than twenty varieties harvested today, including Ambrunés. Picking is done by hand from ladders, from mid-May until late July.
